Honda CB750 SOHC High Performance Valve Springs & Details
This section will provide
some basic guidelines, spring pressure comparisons and recommendations
for some of the larger camshafts listed below.
Installed heights and such are a good start. But, installed height seat
lbs is what we are going to focus on right now.
Generally speaking, the goal is to have 75-90 lbs of seat pressure with
most performance camshafts.
A small comparison:
Stock K model valve spring installed height (1.455ish) seat pressure lbs
(no shims)
50 lbs
Stock 77-78 F model valve spring installed height (1.455ish) seat
pressure lbs (no shims)
60 lbs
Valve weight will also be a factor in making spring pressure decisions.
These valve weights are for Cycle X valves:
F2 intake: 47.5 grams.
F2 exhaust: 47 grams.
K intake: 45.5 grams.
K exhaust: 41 grams.
K oversize 33.5 intake: 49 grams.
5mm Kibblewhite 34mm intake: 38 grams
5mm Kibblewhite std exhaust: 29 grams
Note:
Do not use OEM stock upper valve spring retainers with higher pressure
springs and performance camshafts on 77-78 "F" super sport models.

Question:
Are valve guides pre-honed?
Reply:
If someone's advertisement is suggesting that you install their
guides and no reaming or honing is needed ..... They are wrong and
have misleading adds.
First:
Not all valves have the same valve stem diameter
Second:
All guides collapse a bit in the middle of the bore when installed.
Here is what we do:
We blast the carbon off so when we remove the guides the carbon
doesn't damage or tear aluminum on the way out.
Then we measure the inside of the valve guide hole to determine the
proper OD of the guide being used.
The cylinder head is heated and the valve guides are pulled in place
with a special tool instead of drifting in place.
Speaking of drifting,
Drifting the guide will "mushroom" the top side of the guide and in
a worst case scenario ..... The valve guide can develop an "S" shape
on the inside bore. These mushroom and "S" shapes are common with
mainly Bronze guides.
We then ream the guide to get it somewhat straight and follow-up
with a Diamond hone to the exact dimensions.
Also,
The diamond hone will leave a nice pattern to retain a small amount
of oil.
A muti-angle valve job is then done because the new valve guide will
never follow the exact path of the old guide.
